Bone Graft for Dental Implants: Cost, When You Need One, and How to Avoid It

A bone graft costs $500 to $3,000 per site and adds 3-6 months to your implant timeline. But not everyone needs one. Here is what determines whether you do.

Bone Graft

$500 - $3,000

Per site. Depends on graft type and size.

Sinus Lift

$1,500 - $5,000

Upper back teeth only. Lifts sinus floor.

Cost by Graft Type

Graft TypeCost
Autograft$2,000 - $3,000
Allograft$500 - $2,000
Xenograft$500 - $1,500
Synthetic$500 - $1,000

Sinus Lift: When and Why

A sinus lift is a specialized bone graft for the upper back jaw. The maxillary sinus sits directly above your upper molars. If the sinus floor is too close to where the implant needs to go, the floor must be lifted and bone added underneath.

When it is needed: Upper back teeth (premolars and molars) when the CT scan shows insufficient bone height between the jawbone ridge and the sinus floor. This is common if the tooth has been missing for several years.

Recovery: 4-6 months of healing before the implant post can be placed. You may have mild sinus congestion for 1-2 weeks after the procedure.

Sinus Lift Cost Breakdown

Lateral window sinus lift$1,500 - $5,000
Crestal sinus lift (less invasive)$800 - $2,500
Additional graft material$300 - $800

The crestal approach is less invasive and cheaper but only suitable when minimal lift is needed (1-3mm). The lateral window approach is used for larger augmentations.

Who Needs a Bone Graft?

Likely to Need a Graft

  • Waited more than 6-12 months after tooth loss
  • Have a history of periodontal (gum) disease
  • Naturally thin or narrow jawbone
  • Had a tooth extracted without socket preservation
  • Upper back teeth (sinus area)
  • Wear dentures that have caused bone loss over time

Likely to Avoid a Graft

  • Acting within a few months of tooth loss
  • Had socket preservation at time of extraction
  • Good overall bone density (younger patients often)
  • Front or premolar teeth (better bone quality)
  • No history of gum disease
  • Good general health and nutrition

How to Avoid Needing a Bone Graft

Socket preservation at extraction

When a tooth is extracted, your dentist can pack the empty socket with graft material to preserve bone volume. This costs $150-$400 at the time of extraction but can save you $500-$3,000 on a full bone graft later.

$150 - $400

Act quickly after tooth loss

Bone begins to resorb within weeks of tooth loss. The jawbone can lose 25% of its width in the first year alone. The sooner you start the implant process, the less bone you lose.

Discuss timing with your dentist before extraction

If you know you want an implant, tell your dentist before the extraction. They can plan socket preservation and potentially place the implant immediately after extraction (immediate placement), avoiding the need for a graft entirely.
